Ask Experts About Virtual Advice

Mandy asks…

computer problem, looking for advice…?

Hey,

I’ve been getting a window that pops up saying that my virtual memory is too low and I believe this is why my computer has been performing quite slowly recently.

Can anyone tell me what virtual memory is..why could it be low…and what can i do to bring it up again?

I have tried looking at windows help but I’m still confused!!

would appreciate any advice!
Thanks

Hi nics
in laymans terms, virtual memory is part of your hard drive that used as if it were real(or system) memory
the rule of thumb is virtual memory is one and a half times the size of your system ram(memory)
so if your have 1024mb or 1gb of memory, then your virtual memory(also known as your page file) will be 1536mb of 1.5gb
to bring you virtual memory back up all you need to do is wait, windows will steadily increase your virtual memory, however during this period its best to stop doing anything too memory intensive
in the long term its best to consider upgrading your memory if you continue to receive these “virtual memory too low” messages
i have 2gb of ddr ram and i havent had any virtual memory messages for a while,so this is a good indication of what you need to aim for when upgrading your memory, however 1gb would be a good place to start
windows can be quite confusing however its quite simple really, one excellent website that helps you understand windows better is Paul Thurrott’s SuperSite for Windows(http://www.winsupersite.com/),which has some excellent information and advice !
Any problems let me know
good luck nics !
